From Our Streets to Our Seas: Tales of Heritage, Memory and Myth
Celebrating the stories of North Shields Fish Quay through film, music and more
Friday 24 October, from 6.30pm | Salt Market Social, North Shields

A unique evening of film, photography, live music and storytelling will bring the rich heritage and hidden histories of North Shields Fish Quay to life on Friday 24 October, from 6.30pm at Salt Market Social.

From Our Streets to Our Seas: Tales of Heritage, Memory and Myth, created with local communities and produced by Tyneside Cinema and Pinwheel, forms part of NS800, celebrating 800 years of North Shields.

The evening will feature the premiere of Tides, a new short film by Sam and Anthony Gannie about the past, present and future of North Shields, alongside five newly commissioned animated shorts inspired by unforgettable Fish Quay stories. Artist Olly Armstrong will lead audiences on a winding trail of tales gathered with the community, while AmberSide presents a specially curated gallery of images from their extensive North Shields archive. Live music will come from Staithe, Olly Armstrong and others, including original songs written in response to the Fish Quay and its people.

“This is a celebration of North Shields in all its richness - its heritage, its people, its stories and its myths,” said Katy Fuller, Director at Pinwheel. “Working with local communities has been at the heart of the process, and we’re thrilled to share the films, music and photography they’ve inspired. The Fish Quay has always been a place where stories wash ashore, and this event is a chance to gather and tell them together.”

Filmmaker Anthony Gannie, co-director of Tides, added: “The Fish Quay is full of voices and memories that deserve to be heard. Making Tides was an incredible journey. This project is about preserving those stories and sharing them with new audiences in a way that feels alive and rooted in the community.”

Nic Greenan, CEO at Tyneside Cinema, commented: “From Our Streets to Our Seas shows what happens when raw local voices meet the power of cinema and storytelling. We’re amplifying communities who otherwise would not be heard.”

The event promises not only to honour the past but also to give space to new voices, offering audiences the chance to contribute their own stories as part of this one-night-only celebration.
