North Shields Voices is the result of a six-month project by Remembering The Past to record the spirit of the town in 2025. Local residents from across the town were interviewed by our volunteers and their stories, memories and thoughts on the town recorded for the community archive.
Featuring striking photographic portraits of some of the interviewees by photographer Hazel Plater, alongside their interview excerpts, the exhibition offers a vivid snapshot of life today, revealing the town’s rich history, vibrant community, and hopes for the future. Visitors to the exhibition will also have the chance to see new artwork by Conrad Milne, inspired by the town’s 800 year history and using some of Remembering The Past’s archive material.
Made possible thanks to National Lottery players through the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Remembering the Past is a volunteer-led charity dedicated to collecting and managing a digital archive of sound recordings and images that reflect every aspect of local life in North Tyneside since the early 1900s. We began in 1997 and have built one of the longest-running and most diverse community history archives in the country. By sharing memories and history with diverse generations and groups, we aim to contribute to stronger, more connected communities in and around North Tyneside.
